This area of my teaching is about gaining orientation inside music — sensing where you are, where things are going, and what gives a piece its inner coherence. It is meant to support confidence, clarity, and creative freedom, whether you are playing, studying, or composing.

Harmony provides the structural foundation that allows tonal music to move, breathe, and make sense over time.

In my teaching, harmony is most of the time approached practically. We work with basso continuo, the rule of the octave, cadences, and common harmonic patterns by writing, playing, and listening — on your instrument, at the keyboard, or through simple exercises adapted to your level.

The aim is for harmonic relationships to become something you recognise and feel, not just something you can explain. Depending on your interests, we can also work with modal and atonal harmonic languages, always keeping sound and perception at the centre.

I understand analysis as the reverse process of composition: learning how music is made in order to understand what it is saying.

We analyse pieces you play or study to uncover their inner logic — form, harmony, tension and release — and to see how these elements support expression. This kind of analysis has an immediate impact on interpretation: phrasing becomes clearer, musical decisions more intentional, and what you want to say through the music easier to communicate.

The same tools can then be used creatively, as a way of learning compositional techniques and expanding your expressive vocabulary.

Composition lessons focus on exploration and creativity rather than style imitation.

Through short exercises in different musical languages, we identify what consistently attracts you — particular sounds, harmonic colours, rhythmic ideas, or ways of shaping time. From there, we work on developing these elements into a personal and coherent musical voice.

We can explore counterpoint, modal writing, tonal or post-tonal composition, writing for different instruments, and arranging music for new contexts. Composition is approached as both a creative and communicative practice: learning how to make your musical ideas clear on the page, in rehearsal, and in performance.
